Oman has recently implemented significant reforms to its labor law, focusing on improving the rights and benefits of both citizens and employees. Oman’s new labour law 2023, is about sick leave and all. These changes have been praised by both employers and staff, as they address crucial aspects of labor conditions in the country and aim to enhance employment relations.

Some of the key highlights of Oman’s new labour law 2023:

  1. Extended Leaves: The new law introduces longer paid leaves for parents, caregivers, and those who are sick. Working mothers are entitled to 98 days of paid maternity leave, covering both pre and post-childbirth periods. They can also take up to one year of unpaid leave for child care. After returning to work, they are given an hour daily for child care. Fathers can avail of seven days of paternity leave. Those who need to care for a sick family member can take a 15-day leave. Employees are granted 182 days of sick leave with varying pay percentages based on the number of sick days.
  2. Study Leave: Employees enrolled in schools, institutes, or universities are entitled to 15 days of study leave.
  3. Part-Time Work: The law now allows employees to work for another employer on a temporary basis, aiming to ease business operations and reduce recruitment costs.
  4. Probation and Performance Appraisals: Employers can terminate an employee’s contract if they fail to meet performance and productivity goals. The employee should be informed about areas of inefficiency and provided with a minimum of six months to address them. Business owners are also required to establish a performance appraisal system.
  5. Omanisation: The new law supports ‘Omanisation,’ which aims to replace expatriate employees with Omani workers in the same position. Expat employees can be terminated if an Omani worker is hired as their replacement.
  6. Women’s Area: Establishments with more than 25 female employees are required to create a dedicated rest space for women.

Overall, these reforms in Oman’s labor law seek to modernize regulations, protect employees’ rights, and create a more favorable working environment for both citizens and expatriates.
