Jim Koch started brewing beer in his kitchen using a family recipe and turned that experiment into the Boston Beer Company, a business that now generates more than $1 billion in annual revenue. The company is known for Samuel Adams, Truly Hard Seltzer, and Angry Orchard.

From Consultant to Craft Brewer

Before founding Boston Beer, Koch worked as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. At 34, he decided that staying in a comfortable, secure job felt riskier than pursuing something new, since he worried about looking back with regret. He raised money from friends and family over a single weekend and began brewing what would become Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Within months, the beer won an industry award, and the company quickly surpassed the sales goals Koch had originally set for it.

Koch says his approach to product development has always come down to one question: is it better or cheaper than what already exists. That philosophy guided the creation of later hits like Truly Hard Seltzer, which he initially expected to be a small, niche product before it became one of the beverage industry’s biggest breakout successes.

Giving Back to the Craft Beer Industry

Beyond building his own brand, Koch has focused on strengthening the wider craft beer community. During a hops shortage, Boston Beer shared a large portion of its supply with smaller brewers at cost to help them stay afloat. The company later expanded this support through Brewing the American Dream, an initiative that has provided over $100 million in funding and mentorship to food and beverage entrepreneurs. Koch has said he views fellow brewers as collaborators rather than competitors in growing the industry.
