Bezos Says AI Could Let Families Thrive on One Income

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has painted a strikingly optimistic picture of artificial intelligence, arguing the technology could ease pressure on household finances rather than wipe out jobs. His outlook stands in sharp contrast to warnings from several prominent AI and business leaders.

In an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier earlier this week, Bezos said AI-driven productivity gains could eventually make two-income households unnecessary, allowing a single salary to support an entire family.

Could a Three-Day Workweek Become Normal?

Bezos also suggested rising productivity could change how many days people need to work. Some workers, he said, will decide they can support their family on three days a week, which he described as exactly what economic productivity means.

Rather than mass unemployment, Bezos foresees a hiring challenge. If people no longer need to hold multiple jobs to make ends meet, he argued, employers could face a smaller pool of candidates and find it harder to recruit.

He is not alone in expecting more free time. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has predicted that today’s children could work roughly three and a half days a week, while Elon Musk has argued AI could make work optional and money irrelevant.

Warnings of Job Losses Persist

Others are far less hopeful. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned in May 2025 that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs and lift US unemployment to between 10% and 20%. Geoffrey Hinton has cautioned that wealthy firms may use AI to replace workers, and Ford CEO Jim Farley has predicted half of white-collar jobs could vanish.

Whether AI delivers shorter workweeks or deeper layoffs may depend on how companies choose to use the productivity gains it creates.
