Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone Duo at $1,999

Apple used its “Surprise and Shine” event on Wednesday to unveil its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, marking a major product shift under new CEO John Ternus, who officially took charge on September 1. The event also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, refreshed AirPods, and upgraded Apple Watch models.

A New Kind of iPhone

The iPhone Duo opens from a 5.4-inch front display into a 7.6-inch inner screen and is built to fold at flexible angles for photos and video. It is Apple’s first iPhone compatible with the Apple Pencil and is constructed from titanium with dust and water resistance. Apple executives described extensive engineering work on the hinge to prevent visible creasing over time. The device starts at $1,999 for 256GB storage, arrives in white and night sky colorways, and opens for preorder on October 16, shipping October 23.

Updated Lineup Across the Board

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max debut a new A20 Pro chip, delivering major battery gains — up to 36 hours on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max — along with upgraded cameras and new color options. Pricing starts at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, with preorders opening September 12.

Siri also received a significant overhaul, gaining contextual awareness, integration across roughly 3,000 apps, and new writing and editing capabilities. AirPods 5 now bring active noise cancellation to Apple’s entry-level model at $129, while the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce more frequent heart-rate tracking and a new Readiness health score, priced at $399 and $799.
