Vinod Khosla Buys Seahawks for Record $9.6 Billion

Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla is set to become the new owner of the Seattle Seahawks after his investment group agreed to purchase the reigning Super Bowl champions for $9.6 billion, the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise. The deal still requires approval from NFL owners, expected to be voted on at a meeting in late August.

A Conflict of Interest to Resolve

There’s a catch: Khosla currently holds a stake in the San Francisco 49ers, a rival franchise he joined last year when the team was valued at $8.5 billion. To move forward with the Seahawks purchase, he will be required to give up his 49ers ownership entirely, since NFL rules bar owners from holding interests in more than one team.

The Seahawks’ Path to Sale

The Seahawks have been controlled by the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen since he passed away in 2018. His sister, Jody Allen, has overseen the franchise as trustee, working to fulfill his wish that the team eventually be sold with the proceeds donated to charity. That process has now culminated in the record-setting sale to Khosla’s group.

Khosla, whose net worth is estimated at $13.8 billion, takes control of a team coming off a strong stretch of success. The Seahawks defeated the Patriots in the 2026 Super Bowl and have reached the playoffs in seven of the past ten seasons, making this one of the most valuable and competitive assets in professional sports to change hands.

If approved, the sale would mark one of the largest ownership transitions in NFL history and cement Khosla’s entry into major league sports ownership.
