Trader Joe’s $7.4M Settlement: Check If You’re Owed $102

Trader Joe’s has agreed to a $7.4 million class action settlement after a lawsuit alleged the popular grocery chain violated federal law by printing too many digits on customer receipts. Shoppers who used credit or debit cards at participating Trader Joe’s locations between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, may be entitled to a cash payout of approximately $102.45 per person.

What Was the Violation?

The lawsuit claimed that receipts at certain Trader Joe’s stores displayed the first six and last four digits of customers’ payment cards — more than the legally permitted number. Under federal law, this alone constitutes a violation, regardless of whether actual identity theft occurred. Trader Joe’s denied any wrongdoing and reported no confirmed cases of identity theft linked to the receipts. Nevertheless, the company’s insurer chose to settle rather than endure a prolonged legal battle.

How to File Your Claim

Eligible customers must submit their claims through the official settlement website before the June 6, 2026 deadline. To file, you will need either the Class ID number sent to you via email or postcard, or the first six and last four digits of the card used along with your purchase date. You do not need proof of identity theft to qualify — the receipt violation itself makes you eligible.

If you shopped at Trader Joe’s during the specified period and paid by card, it is worth checking your records. The deadline is approaching fast, and unclaimed funds do not carry over to individual claimants.
