Max Mara Marks 75th Anniversary With Archival Coat Revival
Max Mara is marking its 75th anniversary with a wide-ranging celebration that spans a Shanghai exhibition, a resort 2027 runway presentation, and the reissue of three archival coats reimagined in lightweight cashmere. The Italian fashion house, chaired by Luigi Maramotti, continues to be defined by the tailored coats that built its reputation over more than seven decades.
A Family Legacy Rooted in Purpose
Board member Maria Giulia Prezioso Maramotti, granddaughter of founder Achille Maramotti, described the brand’s mission as empowering women to embrace their individuality rather than chase perfection. Chairman Luigi Maramotti echoed this sentiment, framing the company’s growth as tied to a broader cultural responsibility shared with its customers. The Max Mara Fashion Group, which also owns labels like Sportmax, Marella, and Marina Rinaldi, generated nearly 2 billion euros in revenue in 2025 and operates roughly 2,300 stores worldwide.
Griffiths Reflects on Decades of Design
Creative director Ian Griffiths, who joined the company in 1987 and became its lead designer in 2005, said his approach has always been to protect Max Mara’s identity rather than impose his own signature. He credited the brand’s family ownership with giving him the freedom to develop ideas gradually rather than under pressure to reinvent each season.
The anniversary reissues include the Meridian, Millenia, and Metric coats, originally launched in 1994, 1998, and 2015 respectively. Each is being produced in a run of only 200 numbered pieces, complete with tags detailing the coat’s history and original sketch. All three were displayed at “The Max!” exhibition at Shanghai’s Long Museum West Bund, alongside the debut of a new belted style called the Ready, shown on both male and female models for the first time.
