Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, and Gayle King suit up for historic all-female space mission

Katy Perry and others are part of Blue Origin’s first all-female space flying, and they’re taking off in suits custom-made by Monse.

Making Space Chic: A Blue Origin First

In a groundbreaking moment for space travel and fashion, six women — including Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, and Gayle King — are headed to space on Monday, April 14, aboard a Blue Origin rocket. This marks the first all-female space mission by Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company.

Joining them on this history-making journey are NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut and bioastronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn.

Custom-Made Suits with a Stylish Twist

Their journey isn’t just about breaking barriers — it’s also about redefining spacewear. For this mission, the women will be wearing custom-designed astronaut suits by Monse, the luxury fashion house co-founded by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim.

Lauren Sánchez, 55, who played a key role in commissioning the suits, told The New York Times that this was about more than style: “Usually, these suits are made for a man — and then tailored for women. Not this time.”

The Monse-designed suits are made from flame-resistant stretch neoprene, offering both safety and form-fitting functionality. They include zippers at the calves to allow for a flared-leg option, and each astronaut underwent a 3D body scan to ensure a perfect fit.

Where Function Meets Fashion

While elegance and individuality were part of the vision, the team also emphasized safety and comfort. Sánchez joked that she tested early suit prototypes by performing stretches and backbends to make sure “it doesn’t split up the back in space.”

Designer Fernando Garcia shared that the design was inspired by motocross gear and ski suits, aiming for a sleek, bold look with just enough edge. “I almost put a corset in your suit,” he teased Sánchez, who admitted she would’ve been on board with it.

Despite the fashion-forward approach, Sánchez was clear: “Flattering and sexy was a goal, but performance came first.”

Space Style That Inspires

This mission is more than just another launch — it’s a moment that celebrates female empowerment, scientific achievement, and personal expression all at once. By merging high fashion with high-altitude ambition, these women are proving that you can reach for the stars — and look incredible doing it.
