Airbnb CEO Plans Major Growth Revival After Disappointing Numbers
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has expressed strong dissatisfaction with his company’s declining growth trajectory and outlined ambitious plans to accelerate expansion through strategic reinvention. Speaking at the Skift Global Forum conference on Tuesday, Chesky revealed his concerns about the company’s performance and his vision for a dramatic turnaround.
Declining Growth Numbers Prompt CEO Action
The vacation rental giant has experienced a significant slowdown in recent years, with growth rates dropping from 40% in 2022 to just 18% in 2023, followed by 12% in 2024. The second quarter of 2025 showed revenue growth of only 13%, figures that clearly frustrated the company’s leadership.
“I’m not happy about where the growth rate is at the company,” Chesky stated during his conference appearance. “I think Airbnb should be growing significantly faster. It should at least be growing in the teens, and I aspire to run the kind of company that’d be growing at more than 20% one day.”
Strategic Reinvention Through AI and Expanded Services
To address these challenges, Chesky outlined a comprehensive transformation strategy focusing on two key areas. First, the company plans to expand beyond its core accommodation business by developing additional services and experiences for travelers. This diversification aims to create new revenue streams and enhance customer engagement.
The second pillar of Chesky’s revival plan involves positioning Airbnb as an “AI-first application” over the coming years. This technological transformation represents a fundamental shift in how the platform operates and serves its users.
The CEO’s frank assessment and detailed roadmap signal Airbnb’s commitment to regaining its former growth momentum in an increasingly competitive travel technology landscape.
