Shaq Turns Credit Lessons Into Campus Tour

Shaquille O’Neal is adding another title to his long list of post-NBA ventures: Credit Professor. The Hall of Famer is fronting the Credit One Bank Credit Tip Off Tour, bringing credit education to college campuses across the country in a mix of games, music, and candid financial talk.

From MBA to Credit Classroom

O’Neal has built a habit of returning to school whenever he felt out of his depth in a business setting. Early in his career, he noticed that partners negotiating deals would speak only to his representatives, not to him directly. That experience pushed him to earn his MBA so he could understand terms like EBITDA and capital gains tax firsthand. He’s since gone back to school again, this time pursuing a degree in criminology tied to his role as Chief of Community Relations in Henry County, Georgia.

A Costly Lesson in Credit Scores

The idea for the tour traces back to a personal financial stumble. Despite having just signed a massive NBA contract, O’Neal was denied when trying to buy a house because of his credit score — a term he’d never even heard before that moment. He later learned that canceling old credit cards can actually shorten credit history and hurt scores, and that missed payments can linger on a credit report for up to seven years.

The tour will stop at four campuses — SMU, Georgia State, a Baton Rouge venue, and Florida Atlantic — joined by influencers Jenna Bandy, Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia, and James Dumoulin. The goal, O’Neal says, is simple: give students the credit education nobody gave him.
