Record Billionaire Numbers Surge 8.8% on Tech and Inheritance Boom
Record-Breaking Year for Global Wealth
The world has officially reached an unprecedented milestone with 2,919 billionaires, marking an 8.8% increase from 2024, according to a new UBS report. These ultra-wealthy individuals command a combined net worth of approximately $15.8 trillion, with their collective wealth climbing roughly 13% year-over-year. The surge reflects not only the emergence of new billionaires but also the accelerating fortunes of existing ones, signaling a dramatic concentration of global wealth.
The Technology and AI Wealth Engine
The primary catalyst behind this billionaire explosion is the explosive growth of artificial intelligence and technology stocks. The “Magnificent Seven”—comprising Nvidia, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Google, and Tesla—have collectively surged 25% in 2025. Tech giants like Oracle founder Larry Ellison and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang epitomize this trend, with Ellison’s fortune growing by $104 billion year-to-date alone. Huang’s wealth similarly skyrocketed by $45 billion, cementing his position as the world’s ninth-richest person.
Inherited Wealth: The Other Billionaire Generator
Beyond technology, inheritances represent the second major driver of billionaire multiplication. Of 287 newly minted billionaires, approximately 70% are self-made entrepreneurs, while 91 inherited their wealth. Notably, pharmaceutical families in Germany feature prominently among inheritance-based billionaires. Looking ahead, an estimated $5.9 trillion in wealth will transfer to heirs over the next 15 years, virtually guaranteeing sustained or increased billionaire population growth.
The United States dominates this landscape, housing 924 billionaires—nearly one-third of the global total—including 87 new self-made billionaires.
