Perplexity Makes $200 AI Browser Completely Free
Perplexity has announced a major shift in its pricing strategy, making its Comet AI browser completely free after initially launching at $200 per month. The $20 billion AI startup introduced Comet in July 2025, promising an advanced browsing experience with integrated artificial intelligence capabilities.
CEO Aravind Srinivas explained the decision to Business Insider, stating the company wants to “build a better internet” that’s accessible to everyone. The browser had reportedly attracted millions of users to its waitlist before the price change.
What Comet Offers Users
Comet distinguishes itself through AI-generated summaries focused on high-quality sources and an integrated assistant that automates various web tasks. The browser can connect with popular applications including Gmail, LinkedIn, and calendar services to streamline daily activities like drafting email responses and scheduling appointments.
Srinivas previously described Comet’s potential to function as a personal or executive assistant, handling routine digital tasks that typically consume significant time. The browser emphasizes “research paper quality” sourcing and has established partnerships with leading journalism outlets.
Standing Out in a Crowded Market
The free release comes as AI-generated content proliferates across the internet, with Meta and OpenAI recently launching AI video feeds. Srinivas acknowledged the challenge, noting that distinguishing AI-generated content from human-created material will become increasingly difficult.
Perplexity faces competition from tech giant Google, which has integrated similar AI features into Chrome through “AI mode” and “AI search.” Industry observers have noted the striking similarities between Google’s offerings and Perplexity’s approach.
By eliminating its subscription fee, Perplexity aims to democratize access to advanced AI browsing tools while differentiating itself through superior source quality and comprehensive automation capabilities.
