Amazon Shuts Down All Fresh and Go Stores After Failed Retail Experiment

Amazon has officially ended its decade-long experiment with physical retail convenience stores. The e-commerce giant announced it will close all 72 Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations, marking the complete exit from these branded store formats. The company plans to convert some locations into Whole Foods markets and invest in expanding that brand instead, with over 100 new Whole Foods locations expected in coming years.

Why Amazon’s Retail Experiment Failed

The closure reveals fundamental challenges with Amazon’s approach to brick-and-mortar retail. Amazon Fresh attempted to compete as a mass-market grocery alternative, offering high-tech shopping carts and competitive pricing, yet failed to attract sufficient customer loyalty. Meanwhile, Amazon Go’s innovative checkout-free convenience stores, once touted as the future of retail, never achieved the scalability Amazon envisioned. The company had already reduced Amazon Go locations by more than half since 2023, signaling growing struggles before today’s announcement.

What’s Next for Amazon’s Retail Plans

Despite shuttering these formats, Amazon isn’t entirely abandoning physical retail. The company recently won approval to open its largest-ever store in Orland Park, Illinois, suggesting a shift in strategy. Amazon appears to be pivoting toward larger-format stores rather than smaller convenience-based concepts. This signals that the retail giant believes bigger, more comprehensive shopping experiences may succeed where mid-sized experiments failed, representing a significant recalibration of its physical retail ambitions.
