After being diagnosed with calciphylaxis, Lexi Reed discusses being “terrified to my core” and “fighting for my life.”
The weight loss influencer was hospitalised and unable to move or stand independently for months after receiving a diagnosis of calciphylaxis last year.
Despite how drawn-out and excruciating her recovery, Lexi Reed says she won’t give up on her health.
On Monday, the weight loss influencer revealed how terrified she felt after learning. She had calciphylaxis in the agonising days following renal failure. The 31-year-old outlined the reality of her uncommon condition by posting an Instagram picture showing the scars on her stomach from her healed wounds.”
I had never heard of calciphylaxis before. It turned my world upside down. A condition is so uncommon the doctors had to research it before attempting to help me, “Reed wrote in the image’s caption. “An illness that left me with dead, necrotic skin on my thighs and shoulders, creating painful wounds.”
She continued, “A disease that left me in tears every day and wondering how strong I was to keep going.”
“When the infection rate was so high, and the mortality rate for the disease was so high (45-80%). I was told I would be lucky to survive for six to twelve months.
With this illness, I was constantly terrify that I might not see my spouse or other loved ones or even wake up. That every moment might be my last.”Following a month-long hospitalisation during which she was on a ventilator and in a medically-induced coma as her organs began to fail. Reed first disclosed that she could not move or stand independently in February 2022.
A few months later, she disclosed that the Cleveland Clinic had identified calciphylaxis. As the cause of her symptoms, a disease in which calcium deposits in blood vessels obstruct blood flow to the skin. Open wounds and possibly fatal infections can result from it.
Since then, Reed has undergone several debridement procedures to remove damaged tissue so. That her wounds can recover.No matter what challenges calciphylaxis throws me. I’ve been battling against all odds, and every scar is evidence of that. However, this is healing. Reed concluded her blog entry.
