Paris Fashion Week SS27 Trades Drama for Wearable, Real-World Style

Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 closed on Tuesday with Louis Vuitton, ending a season shaped by pragmatism. With economic and political uncertainty looming, designers leaned towards collections that felt wearable and commercially savvy, while still leaving room for poetry, politics and spectacle.

Commercial Instincts Take Centre Stage

Several houses softened their approach. At Maison Margiela, Glenn Martens said the brand must now speak to a much broader audience. Jean Paul Gaultier’s Duran Lantink aimed for more wearability, though cone bras remained. Chanel’s Matthieu Blazy extended the house’s winning streak with fresh takes on its hit pieces. Industry voices said designers were striving to make reality desirable.

The creative reset continued, but with just two debuts: Drew Henry at Courrèges and Kai Nesselrath at Carven. Alaïa showed a studio-designed collection after Pieter Mulier’s move to Versace. Saint Laurent marked Anthony Vaccarello’s tenth year with a Charlotte Gainsbourg performance, and Valentino invited guests to donate books, a quiet response to rising AI anxiety.

Skirts, Lingerie and Statement Shoes

Skirts dominated, with buyers calling it the season of the skirt. Lingerie-inspired dressing also stood out, from structured bras at Tom Ford to corsets and garter skirts at Balmain. Light, sheer fabrics reflected Europe’s hot summer, and Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière explored clothes that feel like a second skin. Colour grew bolder, with cobalt blue and vivid hues cutting through quieter tailoring.

Shoes emerged as a key category, offering an entry point to luxury for shoppers priced out of heritage brands. Blazy sent out 83 looks at Chanel, each with a different pair of heels, while Gaultier unveiled its “tulip” sandal.

Off the runway, Celine Dion’s Paris residency added to the buzz, with her hotel appearances drawing as much attention as the shows.
