Billionaire Vinod Khosla Buys Seahawks for Record $9.6B
A group led by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 billion, marking the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise, according to ESPN. The deal comes with a catch: Khosla currently holds a stake in the San Francisco 49ers, and he will need to relinquish that ownership position before the Seahawks purchase can be finalized. NFL owners are expected to vote on approving the transaction at a meeting scheduled for late August.
A Legacy Built by Paul Allen
The Seahawks have remained under the control of the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen since he passed away in 2018. Allen’s sister, Jody Allen, has overseen the franchise as trustee, working to fulfill his wish that the team eventually be sold and the proceeds donated to charitable causes. Khosla acknowledged this legacy, saying he looks forward to building on the winning culture Allen established with the organization.
Khosla’s Growing Sports Portfolio
Forbes estimates Khosla’s net worth at $13.8 billion. He joined the 49ers ownership group last year when that franchise was valued at $8.5 billion, meaning the Seahawks deal represents a significant expansion of his presence in professional football, even as it requires exiting his existing NFL investment. The Seahawks enter this new chapter on a high note, having defeated the Patriots in the 2026 Super Bowl and having reached the playoffs in seven of the past ten seasons, making them one of the league’s more consistently competitive franchises heading into new ownership.
