Arianna Huffington Says Work-Life Balance Is a Flawed Goal

Arianna Huffington, founder of Thrive Global and co-founder of The Huffington Post, is challenging one of the most popular workplace ideals: work-life balance. In a recent interview with Fortune, Huffington argued that for people in meaningful, high-impact roles, a clean separation between work and personal life is neither realistic nor desirable.

“I don’t think there is anybody with an interesting job who can do that,” Huffington said, referring to the idea of shutting off from work entirely at 5 p.m. She went further, suggesting that if someone’s to-do list is always complete before bedtime, their job may not be challenging enough — and they should consider finding a new one.

Why She Replaced “Balance” With “Integration”

Huffington takes issue with the word “balance” itself, arguing it falsely positions work and personal well-being as competing forces. Instead, she champions “life-work integration” — the idea that professional success and personal fulfilment can and should rise together. “It’s about rejecting the idea that we should have to choose between being successful at work and successful in other parts of our lives,” she said.

Sleep and Recovery Are Non-Negotiable

Despite advocating for deep professional engagement, Huffington is equally vocal about recovery. Her own turning point came in 2007 when exhaustion caused her to faint and fracture her cheekbone. Since then, she has consistently prioritised sleep — recommending seven to nine hours nightly — alongside regular exercise as the true foundation of sustainable, high performance.

Her core message is straightforward: don’t work less, but recover smarter.
