Barbara Corcoran Spent 15 Years Rewiring Her Inner Voice — Here’s How

Barbara Corcoran, the real estate mogul and Shark Tank investor, has built a reputation for bold decisions and sharp instincts. But behind that confidence was decades of quiet struggle. In a recent episode of The Burnouts podcast, the 77-year-old revealed that believing in herself didn’t come naturally — it was something she had to consciously build, one repeated phrase at a time.

For years, Corcoran carried an internal voice that told her she didn’t belong. In meetings, boardrooms, and important conversations, that voice whispered that she had no business being there. “My tape would say, ‘Hey, Barb, you should have never been here,'” she recalled.

The Turning Point in Her Mid-30s

When Corcoran was in her mid-30s, she recognized that this mental loop was actively holding her back. She made a deliberate decision to replace it. Her new internal mantra became simple and direct: “Barbara, you’re a genius. You’re great.” It felt hollow at first, almost dishonest. But she kept repeating it anyway — through her 30s, 40s, and into her 50s.

“By the time I got to be 50, I pretty much believed it,” she said.

Why the Mindset Shift Took So Long

Corcoran’s story is a reminder that mindset change is rarely quick. It took roughly 15 years of consistent repetition before the new belief felt authentic. The lesson she wishes she had learned earlier? “You’re a lot more capable than you think you are.”

Corcoran founded the Corcoran Group in 1973 and sold it for $66 million in 2001, proving her inner critic could not have been more wrong.
