In an interview with Glamor, UK, published on Thursday, the two-time Emmy nominee reflected on his decision to shave his head two years. After releasing his 2010 debut single “Whip My Hair.”
Speaking at the outlet about a decision she made at age 11, Smith, 21, said, “I love seeing the reflections on my scalp reflect light.”
“Shaving my hair was probably the most radical thing I’ve ever done in the name of beauty,” she added. Speaking to the magazine, Smith noted that “as a black woman, my relationship with my hair and skin is mixed,” which served as a “learning curve” for her.
“Whatever I feel, I like to do it. I do not like to think about it,” she said of her style preferences. “I like being free with her. I think sometimes being yourself is radical.”
“Had to find another beautiful black woman,” he explained. “I see someone like me living their truth and not being trapped by what society says. I think that was the most important for me as a child.”
Last July, Smith shaved his head on stage during a pop-punk performance of his single “Whip My Hair. It was the highlight of the Willow in Concert: Lately, I Feel Everything Facebook Live. Which promoted their fourth studio album release. He shaved his head in March 2020 while spending 24 hours in the conservatory as part of a show installation at Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
