The Confession, an open collection of autobiographical works about the equally remarkable life of William Shatner, was musical with guests including Brad Paisley, John Lurie, Joe Walsh, Dave Koz, and others, and Joe Jonas, as one understands it! Records released records with Republican records.
The 12 songs collaborated with Dan Miller; They Might Be Giants, William Shatner’s Album who co-wrote and produced the songs, and Shatner’s longtime friend, Robert Sharenov, whom Shatner referred to as “Rob the Poet.”
Despite the collaboration and all the guests, BILL is the clear and complete record of William Shatner, the one for his life, from the development of a child forced to fight anti-Semitism (“Toughie”) to COVID (“For one Monday night in London”). He teamed up with Paisley on the album’s most vulnerable track, “So Far From The Moon,” which connects the moon landing with the most challenging time in Shatner’s life when Star Trek was canceled, and he divorced.
I spoke with Shatner about how to get into the recording process, the collaboration process, and more. Steve Baltin: We’ve only got 30 minutes, and there’s a lot to digest on this excellent record.

Baltin: That’s right, for me as a writer, this is very interesting.
Baltin: Good writing often goes unnoticed and goes in the right direction. Was there anything in the middle of making this album that surprised you when you started to reveal all this stuff?
Shatner: All of that took me by surprise. I have no idea William Shatner’s Album. The story leading up to [this] is that a friend of mine named Rob, the poet Rob, didn’t know he was my friend, the CEO. We met every time he came to Los Angeles from New York. And we want to eat Chinese food at a particular Chinese restaurant, Duck; we will meet and become excellent friends for years, decades, decades.
But that’s all we know about each other; we eat every time he comes in and talks about ourselves and each other. Then one day, another man was brought in, his name was Dan Miller. And I don’t know Dan Miller; he’s an Emmy-winning musician who owns a band called They Might Be Giants that I’ve never heard of, but everyone claps when I mention it, so a lot of people listen to it because they can.
