Sujatha Mohan : Biography, Career, and Struggle

Personal Life

Sujatha Mohan, popularly known as Sujatha, was born into a prestigious family background. She is the granddaughter of Paravoor T. K. Narayana Pillai, the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile State of Travancore–Cochin after India gained Independence. Her father, Dr. Vijayendran, passed away when she was just two years old. Sujatha completed her graduation in Economics from St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam. On May 9, 1981, she married Dr. V. Krishna Mohan, and the couple has a daughter named Shweta Mohan, who has also followed in her mother’s footsteps to become a singer. Radhika Thilak and G. Venugopal are her cousins.

Career

Sujatha’s journey in the music industry began at a young age when she used to perform alongside K. J. Yesudas in his stage shows worldwide. Her debut as a playback singer came in the 1975 Malayalam film “Tourist Bungalow,” where she sang the song “Kannezhuthy Pottuthottu” at the tender age of six. She subsequently recorded songs for various composers, including M. K. Arjunan and Salil Chowdhury, and gained recognition with hits like “Odakkuzhal Vili.” Sujatha made her Tamil debut with the song “Kalai Paniyil” from the film “Gaayathri” in 1977.

After taking a break post her marriage in 1981, Sujatha made a successful comeback in 1988 with the film “Kadathanadan Ambadi,” followed by the blockbuster “Chithram.” Her career reached new heights when she collaborated with A. R. Rahman, singing popular songs like “Pudhu Vellai Mazhai” from “Roja” and “Ishq Bina” from “Taal.” Sujatha’s versatile voice and ability to convey emotion through her singing earned her a massive fan following.

In the mid-1990s, Sujatha made a strong comeback in the Malayalam film industry with several notable songs composed by Vidyasagar. She also found success in Telugu films, with many hit songs composed by Mani Sharma. Apart from playback singing, Sujatha has also served as a judge on various singing reality shows, including “Munch Star Singer Junior,” “Idea Star Singer,” and “Airtel Super Singer” on Vijay TV.

She has also been recognized with awards from the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu for her exceptional contributions to music.
