Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke’s Adrenaline-Fueled Racing Hobby

Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke has found his off-duty passion on the race track, joining a growing list of tech executives who pursue adrenaline-pumping activities outside the boardroom.

Speaking on Stripe’s “Cheeky Pint” podcast, Lütke revealed he “immediately fell in love” with racing after visiting a track with a friend. The CEO has since competed in prestigious events including the Rolex 24 endurance race in Daytona, Florida. His Instagram showcases his dedication to the sport, documenting his racing journey.

“I don’t even try to win,” Lütke explained. “I’m still competing against myself, and I see all of the other cars as obstacles.” He credits racing with sharpening essential skills like anticipation and decision-making while providing an unmatched rush of immediacy and adrenaline.

Tech Leaders Embrace Extreme Sports

Lütke isn’t alone among Silicon Valley’s elite in choosing high-octane hobbies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly owned at least five race cars as of 2016 and is currently pursuing his pilot’s license alongside Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla’s Elon Musk.

The Risks Behind the Rush

Zuckerberg’s passion for combat sports has become particularly notable. The Meta CEO has won gold medals in jiu-jitsu, required major surgery for fighting injuries, and even constructed an octagon at his Hawaiian ranch. These activities prompted Meta to include a unique warning in its 2023 annual report, alerting investors that Zuckerberg and other executives participate in “various high-risk activities, such as combat sports, extreme sports, and recreational aviation, which carry the risk of serious injury and death.”

Despite the dangers, these CEOs find value in pushing physical boundaries, suggesting that the same qualities driving corporate success—calculated risk-taking and pressure management—extend beyond the office.
