New Riff Distilling Launches Rare 100% Malted Rye Single Barrel

A Unique Addition to the Rye Market

While single barrel rye whiskey is widely available today, New Riff Distilling of Newport, Kentucky, has introduced a rare expression: 100% malted rye whiskey, aged for a minimum of six years. This release stands out in the American whiskey landscape, where malted rye remains an uncommon choice.

Craft Innovation in Kentucky

Founded as one of Northern Kentucky’s most exciting independent distilleries, New Riff has built a reputation for experimentation. Beyond its expanding age‑stated lineup—including year‑round availability of 8‑year bourbon and rye and the launch of a 10‑year bourbon last year—the distillery explores diverse grain types and fermentation techniques. Past projects have included American single malt whiskey, as well as whiskeys crafted from balboa rye and red turkey wheat.

The Signature Malted Rye

New Riff’s malted rye is distinctive because the entire grain bill is composed of malted rye. The distillery also offers a limited sherry‑finished version of this expression. While other Kentucky producers such as Basil Hayden (Beam Suntory) and Limestone Branch have bottled 100% malted rye, it remains a rarity. Compared to New Riff’s traditional rye—made from a 95% rye mashbill—the malted version delivers a nuttier, more refined flavor profile that tempers the spice often associated with rye whiskey.

Expanding the Single Barrel Lineup

The new 100% malted rye joins New Riff’s established single barrel offerings:

• 6‑year Single Barrel Bourbon

• 4‑year Single Barrel Bourbon

• 6‑year Single Barrel Rye

A Distillery to Watch

With its commitment to innovation and craftsmanship, New Riff continues to push boundaries in Kentucky’s whiskey scene. The addition of a 100% malted rye single barrel reinforces its reputation as a distillery that blends tradition with bold experimentation.
