Mark Cuban urges graduates to target small businesses in their job hunt

levels the playing field between small and large firms.

“AI makes it easier and faster for them to compete with larger companies,” Cuban wrote, adding that the percentage of jobs created by small businesses would continue to increase as a result.

Why small businesses need young AI talent

Cuban pushed back on skeptics who suggested small businesses could simply use AI to stay lean and avoid hiring. He argued the opposite: smaller firms lack deep AI expertise and actively need graduates who have it. “Kids coming out of college have that expertise,” he wrote, noting that small businesses tend to use AI to tackle tasks they previously never had time for — not to cut headcount.

His remarks come as large employers, including Block, are already using AI to justify slowing hiring and automating routine work. Goldman Sachs has estimated that around 300 million jobs globally face some exposure to AI automation. Still, the World Economic Forum projects AI will ultimately create 78 million new roles — many of which will emerge first at smaller, more agile companies.
