Mariska Hargitay spoke about the annulment expected by the US Supreme Court in Rowe v. Wade, a critical case in 1973 that guaranteed abortion rights nationally.
Law and Order: SVU star shared a lengthy post on his Instagram. He condemned the “majority opinion draft” allegedly written by Judge Samuel Alito. Who called Rowe’s decision against Wade a “grossly wrong start.”
Hargitay, 58, wrote that his recently completed job in the Special Victims Unit season 23 kept his mind focused as he moved and felt “angry” at the decisions that might be made.
Harghita, who plays Detective Olivia Benson on the long-running news series, called the leaked opinion “immoral” and “unethical.”
He also explained how the decision would have a “disproportionate” impact on marginalized groups. Including anyone unable to travel outside the state for health care.
“The abolition of these rights will only add to the difficulties that many of these groups already face. Also those who often have the least will suffer the most,” the actress said. Hargitay also talked about the plight of those who become pregnant after sexual assault. Which she described as “a forced eradication of choice.”
Many states, including Louisiana, Missouri, also South Dakota. Have enacted laws to make victims of assault who terminate their pregnancy criminally liable if annulled at the federal level.
“First, the perpetrator decides the victim’s body, followed by a legislative decision,” Harghitai wrote. “Once an attack turns a victim’s body into a crime scene, she may immediately be confronted. That without access to legal abortion, she will not be able to complete her subsequent pregnancy without turning her body into another crime scene.
