“We are on the verge of not becoming a full democracy,” said John Legend in an interview with The Guardian published on Monday.

John Legend advocates for reproductive rights.

In a new news with The Guardian on Monday, the 43-year-old All of Me singer shared her thoughts on the latest draft showing most SCOTUS judges are expected to back Roe v. Wade will vote to secure abortion rights next month.

News of a possible vote broke the night before Legend’s discussions with the publication, prompting musicians to speak up. “I can’t see this … how it happened and say nothing,” he told The Guardian. “We are on the verge of not becoming a full democracy. We are very close to making Maid’s Tale laws.”

He went on to say that before President Joe Biden came to power.

He looked forward to the then candidate’s promises to defend human rights. But as time goes on, the Legend finds hope for change increasingly difficult to bear.

“As someone who thinks it’s a huge tragedy that we let Donald Trump stay president for four year. I feel so relieved under a new regime with someone who cares about this country,” he said. “I’m happy to turn the page about what I feel is a dark era in American history. But now I’m still perturbed.”

Although he uses his platform to talk about social issues that concern him. Legend knows he will not change the direction of the United States alone as the country’s political situation becomes increasingly divided.

“It’s hard to change anything now,” he said. “I think people usually want to do the right thing, but the conservative movement is not interested in concessions or compromises. They are interested in full power and full authoritarianism.”

In the future, he is ready to continue campaigning for abortion rights. “I’m skeptical that our path can come to a solution,” Legend said of the exit. “We have to fight now, and I will do my part.
