Bezos Predicts AI Will Let Families Live on One Income

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has outlined an optimistic vision of an AI-driven economy, predicting that productivity gains could allow a single salary to support a family. Speaking to Fox News anchor Bret Baier earlier this week, Bezos argued that the technology could eventually reshape the economics of household life.

Fewer Workdays, Harder Hiring

Bezos suggested that some workers may decide they can support their families on just three days of work a week, which he described as the real meaning of economic productivity. He also expects more people to opt out of the workforce or avoid holding two jobs. In his view, the result would be a hiring challenge for employers rather than mass unemployment.

Other prominent figures share a similarly hopeful outlook. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said in a 2023 Bloomberg TV interview that today’s children will probably work around three and a half days a week. Elon Musk has said AI could make money irrelevant and turn work into an optional activity, like a hobby.

A Darker Forecast From Other Leaders

Not everyone is convinced. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told Axios in May 2025 that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years, pushing U.S. unemployment to between 10% and 20%. AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton warned the Financial Times in September 2025 that wealthy people would use AI to replace workers, driving up unemployment and profits. Ford CEO Jim Farley made a similar prediction at the Aspen Ideas Festival in June 2025, saying AI could replace half of U.S. white-collar workers.

The contrasting forecasts highlight a central question in the AI debate: whether companies will pass productivity gains on as shorter workweeks or use them to cut headcount.
