Jamie Dimon Keeps Phone Away During Work to Stay Focused

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has revealed an unconventional approach to managing his digital life: he rarely carries his cell phone during the workday. Instead of staying constantly connected, the 69-year-old banking executive keeps his device in his office and relies on staff to relay important messages. This strategy allows him to maintain complete focus during meetings and appointments without the distraction of notifications and messages.

Minimizing Digital Distractions

Dimon explained in a recent CNN interview that people can reach him by calling his office if urgent matters arise. He turns off all notifications except for text messages from his three adult daughters—Julia, Laura, and Kara. “If you send me a text during the day, I probably do not read it,” Dimon stated, emphasizing his commitment to staying disconnected from constant digital communication.

Meeting Etiquette and Full Presence

The JPMorgan Chase leader considers device usage during meetings to be “disrespectful” and has previously stated that checking emails, Slack messages, or iPads in his presence is unacceptable. At Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, Dimon declared: “If you have an iPad in front of me and it looks like you’re reading your email or getting notifications, I tell you to close the damn thing.” This strict approach ensures he achieves 100% focus during discussions.

Dimon’s philosophy contrasts sharply with other tech leaders. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna takes a more flexible stance, allowing device use in larger meetings he considers primarily informational. With JPMorgan holding $3.9 trillion in assets and a market value exceeding $800 billion, Dimon’s leadership style has proven effective for America’s largest bank.
