The traditional corporate slide deck is officially on the endangered species list at Block. CEO Jack Dorsey recently revealed that employees at the fintech giant have stopped bringing PowerPoints to meetings, opting instead for AI-generated prototypes. By utilizing simulated or real-time data, staff can now present functional sketches, diagrams, and working tools that offer a level of depth and realism that static slides simply cannot match.
Efficiency at a Human Cost
While Dorsey praised the transition on the Long Strange Trip podcast, the shift toward AI-driven efficiency has a somber backdrop. Block recently executed massive layoffs, cutting 4,000 employees—roughly 40% of its workforce. Dorsey explicitly framed these cuts as a strategic move powered by AI “intelligence tools” rather than financial instability. He argued that smaller, flatter teams equipped with advanced AI can fundamentally change how a company operates, allowing for real-time updates to project concepts during the meetings themselves.
Joining the Anti-PowerPoint Movement
Dorsey isn’t the first tech titan to wage war on the slide deck. He joins a prestigious list of “deck-haters,” including Jeff Bezos, who famously banned PowerPoint at Amazon in 2004 in favor of high-density “six-page memos.” Similarly, Elon Musk has frequently urged executives to spend less time on presentations and more time on product perfection. However, Dorsey’s approach is unique in its reliance on generative AI to bridge the gap between a raw idea and a tangible, interactive model.
As Block’s gross profit continues to grow, Dorsey predicts that more firms will follow this AI-centric model over the next year. For the modern worker, the message is clear: the ability to prompt a prototype is becoming more valuable than the ability to format a slide.
