Early Life

Hayley Elizabeth Atwell was born on April 5, 1982, in London. She is the only child of her parents, with her mother, Allison Cain, being English and her father, Grant Atwell, being an American photographer from Kansas City, Missouri. Grant Atwell has Irish and partial Native American descent, giving Hayley dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and the United States.

She attended Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girls’ School in London before completing her A-Levels at the London Oratory School. Following this, Atwell took a two-year hiatus to travel with her father and work with a casting director before enrolling at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in acting.

Career

2005–2009: Early Roles and Breakthrough

Hayley Atwell made her professional stage debut in “Prometheus Bound” (2005) at the Sound Theatre in London, playing Io, a maiden exiled by Zeus. Her performance garnered positive reviews, with the British Theatre Guide praising her portrayal.

She continued to excel on stage, starring as Bianca in “Women Beware Women” at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2006. The Guardian lauded her for projecting “the right seductive beauty” for the role.

Transitioning to film, Atwell landed her first major role in Woody Allen’s “Cassandra’s Dream” (2007), portraying stage actress Angela Stark. She further gained recognition with her roles in “The Duchess” (2008) and “Brideshead Revisited” (2008), the latter earning her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

Hayley Atwell continued to diversify her roles, starring as Margaret Schlegel in BBC One’s “Howards End” miniseries (2017–2018), based on the E.M. Forster novel. She played Evelyn Robin in Disney’s “Christopher Robin” (2018) and returned to the stage in productions such as “Dry Powder” and “Measure for Measure,” receiving critical acclaim.

In 2019, Atwell starred in a BBC adaptation of Andrea Levy’s novel “The Long Song.” She reprised her role as Peggy Carter in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
