Eight Sleep, the company behind the Eight Sleep Pod, wants your bed to become the earliest health checkup you own. Founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Alexandra Zatarain and Matteo Franceschetti, the sleep-tech firm is valued at $1.5 billion and is already profitable. The founders argue that the bed you already sleep in could flag problems before a doctor’s visit does.
A Personal Mission Behind the Pod
Zatarain started the venture after watching her father’s cancer take away his sleep, which convinced her that disrupted rest is often the body’s first warning sign. Franceschetti, a former securities lawyer and competitive athlete, struggled with restless legs syndrome and wondered why the hours when the body recovers were never measured. Together they coined “sleep fitness,” treating sleep as something to train and track rather than a piece of furniture.
Unlike trackers such as Oura or Whoop, which only report data, the Pod acts on it overnight. It cools one side of the bed or adjusts the base when someone snores. Its dual-zone design lets partners set separate temperatures, and dedicated modes for menopause hot flashes and pregnancy address needs the mattress industry long ignored. A recurring membership covers the cost of continuously processing sleep data.
Eyeing FDA Clearance and Medical Use
The company is pursuing FDA clearance to detect and mitigate sleep apnea, a step that could make the device prescribable and eligible for insurance reimbursement. The Pod 6, launched September 23, brings a smaller hub, 20% faster cooling and nine times more sensors. It is also the first model sold in solo sizes, starting at $1,999.
Eight Sleep reports positive free cash flow, cumulative Pod sales approaching $1 billion, a presence in 37 countries and more than a billion hours of sleep analyzed. A $50 million round led by Tether Investments in March 2026 set its current valuation. Whether a bed can truly diagnose disease remains unproven, but investors are betting the company’s growing data advantage will make it possible.
