The Christina Applegate actress, who was diagnose with MS in 2021, attended the awards show with her 12-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble. Applegate wore a floor-length velvet tuxedo dress and carried a cane to assist her with balance issues associated with the disease. The cane had sticker letters that read “FU MS.”
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Applegate revealed that this would likely be Christina Applegate last awards show as an actor due to the impact of the disease. She expressed her difficulty in imagining spending long hours on a set due to her condition.
Applegate was diagnose with MS while filming the third season of her show, Dead to Me, on Netflix. She shared that she waited months before watching her own performance due to the struggles she faced with the disease. The actress also experienced weight gain due to inactivity and medication. Which made her feel like she did not look or feel like herself.
Despite the challenges, Applegate was able to appreciate the beauty of the show and all the scenes she was not in, which she enjoyed experiencing for the first time.
In December, Christina Applegate made an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show through virtual means. During her appearance, she shared that her career as an actress has often served as a means to divert her attention away from real-life challenges.
Applegate revealed that she has been dealing with grief and trauma throughout her entire life, and that acting has been her go-to escape. She confessed that she has used acting to avoid confronting past struggles. Such as breakups, trauma, deaths, and her own breast cancer.
However, Applegate mentioned that, for the first time, going to work every day has provided her with a space to grieve. She has been able to channel her emotions related to her MS diagnosis into her character while filming Dead to Me.
