Candice Bushnell Talks Menopause, Sex, And Women Who ‘Never Want To See Penises Again’

The author Candice Bushnell of Sex and the City says there are two types of postmenopausal women: “Some are crazy about sex, and others never want to see a penis again.”

The author of “Sex and the City” encountered “both situations” during his research.

“I find that women in their 60s and 70s seem to be more interested in sex,” says Bushnell, 63.

“There seems to be a phase where you’re just not interest. It just doesn’t work. And then it just seems to pass. Of course, it’s still not acceptable to think of a woman of a certain age as a sexual being. I think that’s something people are uncomfortable with. But it’s change.”

It’s a theme she explores in her 2019 bestseller, Is There Still Sex in the City? (about the woman of Sex and the City 25 years later, including her own life after her 2012 divorce from ballet dancer Charles Ascogard) as well as her eponymous one-woman show.

“Women get the message that after a certain age, they are no longer attractive,” says Bushnell. “Basically that’s the message society is giving women.

The message is to be a grandmother. It just didn’t happen.”

“I think a lot of women are so used to being reproductive people and being mothers, in a social way of demeaning women because I think society tells women that we are only really valuable as child-bearers, nannies and men – and sexual objects. “

“You’ve been told your whole life that these are your values,” he notes. “Now that’s gone, and you know what? You’re still here.” “Nevertheless, she says, there have been changes. “For every woman who doesn’t fit the description – that’s a step in the right direction.”

“Was almost in my late fifties,” he said. “You were expected to fade slowly, turn your hair gray and stop dressing a certain way. Well that has changed. There are many more women over fifty and we are not going away.”
