Burger King is crediting a redesigned Whopper for a sharp turnaround in customer traffic, with domestic same-store sales climbing 8.5% for the three months ending June 30, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The chain overhauled the sandwich’s ingredients and packaging earlier this year, a change executives say is drawing back longtime customers.
The Whopper Effect
Tom Curtis, president of Burger King’s US and Canada business, said many guests are returning to the brand for the first time in years since the revamp. He believes Burger King is gaining ground on McDonald’s, which has recently struggled with softer traffic following marketing campaigns and promotions that failed to resonate with customers.
Betting on Hospitality Next
With the burger itself fixed, Curtis said the company’s next focus is service quality. He continues to personally field customer phone calls several times a week, a practice he has kept up even as the brand grows. In July, Burger King rolled out a quality guarantee on the Whopper, promising to remake any unsatisfactory order immediately or provide a free one on a future visit.
Curtis said his long-term ambition is for Burger King to become known as the fast-food industry’s leader not just in food quality, but in friendliness and overall customer experience — a goal he sees as central to sustaining the chain’s current momentum.
The results come at a pivotal moment in the fast-food burger wars, with Burger King positioning itself as the more customer-focused alternative while McDonald’s works to reverse its own traffic slide.
