Now the model and actress are looking to her teenage daughters Rowan and Greer for inspiration and revealing to news. That they played a part in shaping her current fashion aesthetic.
“There’s a certain youthful feeling that has helped me flow in parts, not being younger but enjoying freshness. Shields, 57, told PEOPLE of her two teens. As she attended presentations, most recently at the York City Fashionphile Certification Center and Exhibition Hall.
“For years, I dressed like an Upper East Side guy… because today I’m hosting and I do all these shows, and that’s the protocol, that’s the uniform. And I look in my closet, and I’m like, ‘This not me.”
Shields adds that her daughter’s experimental perspective inspires her because “they understand fashion differently.” Shields is also involved in a partnership with her teenage daughter. When she becomes interested in something in her daughter’s wardrobe, she doesn’t hesitate to borrow it, which annoys older people.
But if there’s one thing he’s learned from his mom, “imitating is the strongest sign of flattery. So it’s no surprise that Shields’ daughters took a few notes (and snippets) from their mother’s wardrobe.
“They often wear my clothes. So if they’re wearing something that’s mine, that’s validation for me,” Shields said. “So what’s interesting [Rowan] is my bags, belts, and useful stuff. [Grier] tends towards zero functionality in everything. Thing.”
The Blue Lagoon star previously told PEOPLE that their youngest fashionista would most likely borrow something from her wardrobe and joked that it’s most likely in Greer’s hands if she misses out on her outfit. Rowan, meanwhile, took some style cues from her mother when she wore the star’s stunning 1998 Golden Globe prom gown.
