Anthropic CEO Warns AI Will Replace Human Jobs

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup valued at $183 billion and creator of the Claude chatbot, is sounding the alarm about AI’s potential to rapidly displace human workers. At the Axios AI + DC Summit on Wednesday, CEO Dario Amodei declared that AI taking over jobs is “likely” to happen, emphasizing the urgent need to warn the world.

Exponential Growth Demands Immediate Action

“As with most things, when an exponential is moving very quickly, you can’t be sure,” Amodei explained at the event. “I think it is likely enough to happen that we felt there was a need to warn the world about it and to speak honestly.” The company’s leadership, including Head of Policy Jack Clark, stressed that AI’s work displacement potential is accelerating at an alarming pace.

White-Collar Jobs Face Immediate Threat

Amodei’s concerns aren’t new. Earlier this year, he predicted that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level, white-collar positions within the next five years. This projection targets roles traditionally considered safe from automation, marking a significant shift in the employment landscape.

The warning comes as Anthropic continues to develop increasingly sophisticated AI systems. The company, founded by former OpenAI executives, has positioned itself as a leader in AI safety research while building commercially successful products like Claude.

Despite the dire predictions, Anthropic’s leadership maintains that transparency about AI’s potential impacts is crucial. Their public acknowledgment of these risks reflects a growing trend among AI companies to address the societal implications of their technology, even as they continue to advance artificial intelligence capabilities that could fundamentally reshape the global workforce.
