“If you put in the time and effort, anything is possible,” he continued. “For me, it started in Dancing with the Stars [season 29]; that’s when the health kick-started.” But McLean admits he had some challenges along the way: “Then the holidays came, and of course, we were going. Everyone was a bit tougher during the holidays and didn’t stick to diets.”
The boy band BOD is now trying to stay as healthy as possible; He was also candid about his journey to sobriety. “I did a TV show in South Africa in February. So I lost 27 pounds between February and now,” he said.
“And once you get into the routine and start seeing results and feeling better, you sleep better, your mental state is better, your focus is better,” says the father of two.
“You want to keep going. You don’t want to go back.” McLean also revealed that recent touring has helped him stay in shape. He and his bandmates are currently on their DNA world tour in Europe, slated for March 2023 – and the five have also just released their first Christmas album, A Very Backstreet Christmas.
“The summer tour helped because the first half was outdoors and played at 115 degrees,” McLean told the news. “The humidity is 90 per cent. So we just lost weight doing nothing.”
The singer also compared touring to athletes in season. “People don’t realize … I’m not saying we’re Michael Jordan or Tom Brady, but we’re like athletes,” he explained.
